    In questa tesi studiamo un modello di illusioni ottiche di scala introdotto da Franceschiello, Citti, Sarti, e lo estendiamo ad illusioni dipendenti dal tempo. L'illusione viene giustificata come una deformazione della corteccia visiva e un cambiamento della metrica dello spazio indotto dall'input visivo. Introdurremo pertanto strumenti di geometria differenziale riemanniana, e descriveremo la deformazione con un’equazione che generalizza le classiche equazioni di Cauchy Riemann. Infine introdurremo l’equazione del calore, per descrivere il modello temporale, ed arriveremo a giustificare le illusioni

In particolare, si cercano approssimazioni dei nuclei per l'equazione di diffusione e per l'equazione di erosione. Per fare tali approssimazioni si é utilizzato il metodo della parametrice per l'equazione di diffusione, mentre il nucleo dell'equazione di erosione viene trovato a partire dal nucleo dell'equazione di diffusione attraverso la trasformata di Cramér-Fuorier

    Macrophages trajectories smoothing by evolving curves

    When analyzing cell trajectories, we often have to deal with noisy data due to the random motion of the cells and possible imperfections in cell center detection. To smooth these trajectories, we present a mathematical model and numerical method based on evolving open-plane curve approach in the Lagrangian formulation. The model contains two terms: the first is the smoothing term given by the influence of local curvature, while the other attracts the curve to the original trajectory. We use the flowing finite volume method to discretize the advection-diffusion partial differential equation. The PDE includes the asymptotically uniform tangential redistribution of curve grid points. We present results for macrophage trajectory smoothing and define a method to compute the cell velocity for the discrete points on the smoothed curve

    Effect of mechanical separation process on lipid oxidation in European aquacultured sea bass, gilthead sea bream, and rainbow trout products

    Mechanical separation systems are a good option to create new fish products and open new market, however studies on the effect on quality of mechanical treatment on species of interest for European aquaculture, such as European sea bass, gilthead sea bream, and rainbow trout are scarce. Thus in this research, the effect on colour, nutritional quality, and lipid stability was considered immediately after separation process and after 90 days of frozen storage. Results revealed that mechanical separation technique significantly affected colour and lipid stability of the three studied species. Increases in L* and secondary oxidation products were observed, together with a decrease of antioxidant capacity. Nutritional value instead was unaffected by treatment. Thus, mechanical separation process could represent a new way to better exploit species of interest for European aquaculture and acquire new market niches, but oxidative processes during the treatment have to be limited and kept under control

    Mechanical Processing of Hermetia illucens Larvae and Bombyx mori Pupae Produces Oils with Antimicrobial Activity

    The aim of this work was to develop processing methods that safeguard the quality and antimicrobial properties of H. illucens and B. mori oils. We adopted a vegetable diet for both insects: leftover vegetables and fruit for H. illucens and mulberry leaves for B. mori. First, alternative techniques to obtain a good oil extraction yield from the dried biomass of H. illucens larvae were tested. Traditional pressing resulted to be the best system to maximize the oil yield and it was successfully applied to B. mori pupae. Oil quality resulted comparable to that obtained with other extraction methods described in the literature. In the case of B. mori pupae, different treatments and preservation periods were investigated to evaluate their influence on the oil composition and quality. Interestingly, agar diffusion assays demonstrated the sensitivity of Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus to H. illucens and B. mori derived oils, whereas the growth of Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli was not affected. This study confirms that fat and other active compounds of the oil extracted by hot pressing could represent effective antimicrobials against bacteria, a relevant result if we consider that they are by-products of the protein extraction process in the feed industry

    Bridging Representation and Visualization in Prosopographic Research: A Case Study

    In the last decade, the research on ancient civilizations has started to rely more and more on data science to extract knowledge on ancient societies from the written sources delivered from the past. In this paper, we combine two well-established frameworks: Linked Data to obtain a rich data structure, and Network Science to explore different research questions regarding the structure and the evolution of ancient societies. We propose a multi-disciplinary pipeline where, starting from a semantically annotated prosopographic archive, a research question is translated into a query on the archive and the obtained dataset is the input to the network model. We applied this pipeline to different archives, a Hittite and a Kassite collection of cuneiform tablets. Finally, network visualization is presented as a powerful tool to highlight both the data structure and the social network analysis results

    Practical and clinical utility of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS) for the acute treatment of migraine. A post hoc analysis of the randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind PRESTO trial

    Background: The PRESTO study of non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation (nVNS; gammaCore®) featured key primary and secondary end points recommended by the International Headache Society to provide Class I evidence that for patients with an episodic migraine, nVNS significantly increases the probability of having mild pain or being pain-free 2 h post stimulation. Here, we examined additional data from PRESTO to provide further insights into the practical utility of nVNS by evaluating its ability to consistently deliver clinically meaningful improvements in pain intensity while reducing the need for rescue medication. Methods: Patients recorded pain intensity for treated migraine attacks on a 4-point scale. Data were examined to compare nVNS and sham with regard to the percentage of patients who benefited by at least 1 point in pain intensity. We also assessed the percentage of attacks that required rescue medication and pain-free rates stratified by pain intensity at treatment initiation. Results: A significantly higher percentage of patients who used acute nVNS treatment (n = 120) vs sham (n = 123) reported a ≥ 1-point decrease in pain intensity at 30 min (nVNS, 32.2%; sham, 18.5%; P = 0.020), 60 min (nVNS, 38.8%; sham, 24.0%; P = 0.017), and 120 min (nVNS, 46.8%; sham, 26.2%; P = 0.002) after the first attack. Similar significant results were seen when assessing the benefit in all attacks. The proportion of patients who did not require rescue medication was significantly higher with nVNS than with sham for the first attack (nVNS, 59.3%; sham, 41.9%; P = 0.013) and all attacks (nVNS, 52.3%; sham, 37.3%; P = 0.008). When initial pain intensity was mild, the percentage of patients with no pain after treatment was significantly higher with nVNS than with sham at 60 min (all attacks: nVNS, 37.0%; sham, 21.2%; P = 0.025) and 120 min (first attack: nVNS, 50.0%; sham, 25.0%; P = 0.018; all attacks: nVNS, 46.7%; sham, 30.1%; P = 0.037). Conclusions: This post hoc analysis demonstrated that acute nVNS treatment quickly and consistently reduced pain intensity while decreasing rescue medication use. These clinical benefits provide guidance in the optimal use of nVNS in everyday practice, which can potentially reduce use of acute pharmacologic medications and their associated adverse events.
